WASSILY ARMCHAIR

"wassily" model armchair after marcel breuer. Its tubular structure is in chrome-plated curved steel, removable by screw. Seat, back with armrests trimmed with stretched red leather crops, saddle stitching, edition around 1970. The b3 chair (here in good condition) was designed for the first time in 1923 by marcel breuer, hungarian architect and designer. The b3 is also nicknamed the “wassily chair”. For what. It's a nod to the constructivist painter vassily kandinsky, friend of marcel breuer, who would have received one of the first versions because he loved its forms. But it wouldn't be marcel breuer who gave it this name (!?). Its name would have been given 10 years later by the italian manufacturer dino gavina who reissued it and who knew this story. Its chrome-plated tubular steel structure is light. Its seat is in stretched leather. The b3 model would be one of the first tubular steel chairs: marcel breuer uses industry techniques with smooth and curved steel tubes, without visible welding. Why this stroke of genius. In 1923, marcel breuer was head of the bauhaus metal workshop in dessau and rode a bicycle (made by adler). So what. He would have had the idea of using tubes for his furniture by looking at his curved handlebars! This innovative idea therefore marked a turning point in the history of furniture, and opened the way to new design possibilities. In 1925, eileen gray was also a pioneer (she was 51 years old) with marcel breuer (21 years old) in using metal in furniture. Its shape and line reflect the principles of the bauhaus movement with which marcel breuer was associated. This bauhaus movement advocated the harmonious integration of art, craftsmanship and technology in industrial design.
