Description
High-necked ceramic pitcher signed by roger guérin pottery vase by roger guerin (1896-1954), a renowned studio potter from belgium, (guerin is best known for his magnificent glazing effects). Interesting matte gloss finish in cobalt, various browns and creams, with elegant proportions. Hand signed "guerin" under the base. Height: 27 cm. Quick bio: roger thérèse ferdinand guerin was born on february 7, 1896. He studied at the industrial school where he took classes with willem delsaux. Trained on the wheel in the albert gilles pottery workshops in which he worked alongside edgard aubry and in the grégoire-bailleux workshops in châtelet. He did several internships at the sèvres factory. In 1918, he joined the workshop of his former teacher willem delsaux at the university of charleroi; the poterie l'escarboucle opened in 1911 in bouffioulx. Guerin marries camille delsaux, painter and daughter of his teacher. The sandstone works are signed r. Guerin. In 1919, the cooperative company poteries roger guerin was founded, encouraged by jules destrée and paul pastur. From this date, he produced sculptural objects, and from 1920 also tiles, among others for newspaper and tram kiosks in liège. He works on the pediment of the natural history museum in brussels, the montparnasse station in paris and the stairwell of the charleroi courthouse. Guérin creates earthenware pieces with salt enamels based on his own drawings, including a flower bowl (ghent, norbert and georgette poulain-caese collection) as well as based on models by belgian or foreign sculptors.
