This very large ball-shaped vase with a tight and wavy neck is in excellent condition. Designed by françois-théodore legras in the late 1800s, signed by hand by hand by the latter, it is part of a private collection of the artist and was not subject to sale. This magnificent vase represents a vosges landscape of snow-capped plains, bare trees with crow flights, with opacified orange tones majority, and a base enamelled in motte. By its shape, it recalls the vases designed by the porcelain manufacture of monaco. Born in 1839 and died in 1916, françois-théodore legras is one of the best french master glassmakers, at the source of the emergence of art nouveau at the beginning of the 20th century alongside the daum brothers, gallé, majorelle, lalique and catteau. A vosges man, he left his native land for paris, where he became head of manufacturing at the age of 24, then director of a prestigious glassworks three years later. He quickly made a name for himself, going so far as to be appointed responsible for the glassware and crystal engineering part of the 1900 universal exhibition in paris. Although at the source of art nouveau, he will not be able to shine like gallé, daum and lalique in the world, and his works, although very beautiful and sold hundreds or even a few thousand euros for some, will never know the same records and same successes of his counterparts.
