A very cool minimalist and modernist style lounge chair, produced by TON in the 60s in Czechoslovakia. The chair has a very sober yet sleek design and just looks so timeless with his tilted seat and beech bend plywood frame. The upholstery is clicked on the frame through separate bolts, making replacement easy, but also giving a very unique detail. The metal feet have been powder coated in black, originally by design. The entire chair gives a bit of a bit of a modernist feeling but in a Eastern European way. In particular the blue/grey patterned upholstery reveals its origin a bit. Contemporary furniture producer TON is the long-living Czech incarnation of the legendary Thonet company—the oldest surviving furniture manufacturer in the world—founded by German-Austrian cabinetmaker and entrepreneur Michael Thonet in the late 19th century. An acronym for “Továrna ohýbaného nábytku” (in Czech, “Factory for bentwood furniture”), TON nominally refers to the Bystřice pod Hostýnem-based factory that Thonet himself established in 1861. In fact, the sticker below the frame confirms this chair was indeed produced in the Bystřice pod Hostýnem-based factory. The chair is in very good condition with only limited wear visible on the wood and feet. The fabric has been replaced in the past so it’s in perfect condition. The original sticker is still present below the chair.
