Armchair "Elda" by Joe Colombo, 1963

Elda is the first chair to use large areas of plastic-reinforced fiberglass. Its design was created in 1963 and began to be published in 1965 by the publisher Comfort and then by F.LLi Longhi in the 2000s. For his drawing, Joe Colombo inserted himself into ship hulls and used shipbuilding technology to make it. The self-supporting structure is placed on a swivel base with a superposition of upholstered cushions covered with leather. With its enveloping upper part, this piece of furniture creates a space in the room that acoustically isolates it from its environment. Colombo gave him the name of his wife. Foam: polyurethane. Leather: Nero Madras Alce. Semi-aniline leather Semi-aniline leather is a high-quality, tanned skin, immersed in a vegetable bath. The dye penetrates deep into the leather but does not color it. It forms a very thin layer of protection that retains the natural look and unique touch of the skin. Semi-aniline leather has an additional treatment that it receives makes it more resistant than aniline leather. It therefore displays better resistance to light and breathes better.
