Ib Kofod-Larsen: Ib Kofod-Larsen, born in 1921 in Denmark, studied at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. In 1948, he won the Holmegaard glassware competition and the annual Cabinetmaker's Guide Award. This is how he made his mark on the Danish furniture manufacturer Faarup, the Mebelfabrik. Kofod-Larsen created some of his finest works for the Danish company, including the famous Model 66 (1950s). He designed furniture for the biggest manufacturers of the time, both in Finland and abroad. These manufacturers include High Wycombe, Christensen- Larsen, Carlo Gahrn, Bovenkamp, Petersens, and Fredericia Furniture. Kofod-Larsen often works on precious woods, such as teak or rosewood, as well as rich leathers. His work is characterized by clean and sculptural lines. The U-56, or Elizabeth Chair (1956), consisting of a light teak structure and leather furnishing, is one of his most notable pieces. It is said to have been named after Queen Elizabeth II after she bought a pair during a visit to Denmark in 1958. His famous pieces also include the modern and airy Penguin Chair (1953). The latter (sometimes called The Shell) produced by Petersens in Denmark, presents a curved back that embraces the seat. During his career, he had a great success with the Selig company, which imported and sold thousands of copies (canapés, lounge chairs, and others in various wood and upholstery) in the American market from the 1950s. Kofod-Larsen's amazing leather and teak suns (or Seal) for OPE (1950) are now very popular in the vintage market. Kofod-Larsen died in 2003. Today, the designer's pieces are becoming more popular, due to Kofod-Larsen's talent for honouring the natural qualities of his materials. G-Plan: The British furniture manufacturing company G-Plan was launched in 1953, but its origins go back much further. In 1898, Ebenezer Gomme (1858-1931) founded a precision carpentry workshop, E. Gomme Ltd., in High Wycombe, England, one of the major furniture manufacturing centres in the United Kingdom. In the early 1900s, E. Gomme made a transition to a larger factory and in 1911 his sons took over the management. The company was known for its range of high-quality stalks, tables and other storage furniture, created and custom-made.
