Beautiful cover pot in earthenware of Saint John of Brittany, circa 1960. Height 22.5 cm, high diameter 27 cm, low diameter 17 cm, weight 2715 grams. Very good condition. Happiness of the decorations, explosion of colors, geometric motifs with arabesques and Celtic scent,.... the earthenware of Saint John of Brittany does not go unnoticed! It is in Brittany in the Morbihan, in the commune of Saint-Jean La Poterie that these earthenware were produced from 1951, benefiting from the secular heritage of the work of the Earth to potters. It is indeed from 1420 that a community of potters, settled on this territory and developed its talents by producing pottery essentially for utilitarian purpose such as milk pots, cider or honey jars, bowls, soup pots,... In 1881, there are up to 25 master potters installed in Saint-Jean. It was at the beginning of the twentieth century that activity declined until the almost total disappearance of potters during the events of the first world war. It is in 1951 that the Faïencerie of St-Jean de Bretagne opens, counting up to 80 employees benefiting from modern working conditions with oil ovens for example. The decorators make up more than half of the staff and all the decorations are made by hand, as evidenced by the signatures and inscriptions worn on the reverse of each of the pieces.
