Description
French majolica rooster water pitcher by st. Clément. Marked on the bottom, st. Clément, france, 7516. Good vintage condition. Rich colourisation and glaze. A great way to decorate a table. H 34 cm. W (base) 10, 5 cm. D 20 cm. The history of st. Clément pottery is a long one, dating back to the mid 1700s when it was established by jacques chambrette, producing traditional french faience. St. Clément became a favoured supplier for marie antoinette. St. Clément majolica is characterized by the subtle shadings of colours. The majolica pieces include a series of figural jugs or absinthe pitchers in the form of a duck with folded wings, a rooster, or a parrot. Also other animals can be found, like a pig, rabbit, cat, monkey or poodle, but are more rare. Old pitchers mostly have 3-digit numbers while newer productions carry 4-digit numbers. They were mostly produced in the 1920s and 1930s. They are all truly lovely historic pieces of fabulous st. Clément pottery.
