François Szulman (1931) Oil on canvas "Dolceaqua" 41.5 x 33 cm frame: 55x47 cm François Szulman was born on June 5, 1931 in Paris, into a family of Jewish workers who emigrated from Poland. François Szulman exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Independents in 1951. Since then, he has participated in the main Parisian fairs: Painters who witnessed their time, National Arts, Salon d'Automne, Comparisons... His first exhibition in Paris in 1967 at Galerie Régis Langlois in Paris was a great success. From then on, the Galleries and collectors would not stop taking an interest in him and he was finally able to devote himself exclusively to painting. He was treasurer of the National Of Fine Arts from 1984 to 1991. Painter of landscapes, figures, still lifes, he draws his themes from the life, joy and sorrow of our world. With a thick paste, which can go so far as to evoke enamels, it translates a glittering world, of guingois, good-child. Through a falsely naïve style that he has forged over the years, he invented a singular and more abstract painting than it seems. For behind the formal realism of his landscapes, his still lifes and his urban paintings, a poetic and artificial universe is dipped. Through a complex play of colors, shapes and materials, it captures a raw and ephemeral sensation. In a dreamlike world, often empty of men, or at least where people are always stylized and in a posture or motionless gesture, he captures the implausibility, the absurdity but also the beauty of what surrounds and amazes him. Composition of stone, coming from mountains or buildings, plants, trees and fields often dosing off the foreground, and skies from the darkest to the most glowing, each canvas is a reconstruction of the plastic harmony that animates them.
