Description
Superb neo-Gothic chest/Troubadour bench. Carved solid oak. Richly carved with folds of pleated napkins/scrolls, garlands of Ivy and Thistles, Gothic arches and various leaves (it seems to us that there are also leaves of acanthus and Oak). All these elements are rich in meaning in the Christian symbolism (the Ivy is associated with the immortality of the soul, the Thistle to Christ, etc...) and were extensively reused in the nineteenth in the neo-Gothic/Troubadour style. France around 1880. This beautiful copy comes from a church of a private castle. It will easily find its place in an entrance hall, in a room of character or possibly in a lounge where it makes a very original bar. Superb condition, professional restoration (stripping of the old finish, treatment against the xylophages, new polished waxed finish). Seat height: 53 cm.
