This magnificent set of Saori wall lights, designed in the early 1970s by Kazuhide Takahama for the publisher Sirrah, perfectly illustrates Japanese minimalism, balancing geometric rigor with a poetic approach to space. Their square structure, made of painted white metal, is covered with stretched white fabric, softening the light and giving them a diffuse, enveloping presence. Inspired by Japanese washi paper screens and shōji, they allow natural light to filter through, reminiscent of traditional interiors. The fabric intentionally features folds, drawing from the origin of their name, Saori, which refers to a Japanese free weaving technique that prioritises freedom of movement, intuition, and expression. This choice of name reveals the designer's intention to make this wall light not a static object, but a living surface where light interacts with the material. It is precisely in this dialogue between geometric rigor and the unpredictability of the material that the beauty of Takahama's work lies. This model can be installed as a wall light or ceiling light, offering great versatility in use. We have six pieces in stock, all fully restored; the fabric has been replaced with the same off-white stretch fabric, the wiring has been redone, and they are ready for use. Kazuhide Takahama (1930-2010) was a Japanese architect and designer. Trained in architecture and design at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, he worked in a context marked by reconstruction and deep reflection on function, sobriety, and the standardisation of forms. He gained recognition at the Milan Triennale in 1957, where he designed the Japan Pavilion. There, he met Dino Gavina, initiating a long collaboration. Based in Bologna since 1963, he designed for Gavina and other major Italian publishers such as Sirrah and B&B Italia until the 1970s. He developed his style by appropriating the codes of Western modernism while maintaining his minimalist approach.
