Oil on canvas. Lombard-Venetian school, late 17th to early 18th century. A peasant is depicted in the foreground, shown from the waist up, carrying a hoe on his shoulder. The figure is characterised by meticulous attention to detail, from the wrinkles on the face to the dirt on the hands, from the tattered clothing to the roughness of the hoe. The style of the painting recalls the work of Pietro Bellotti, who introduced similar figures in his portraits. The painting has been restored and re-canvas-ed in the past. Framed in a period style.
