Calvin burnett was born in cambridge (ma ) in 1921 and graduated from the massachusetts college of art in 1942. He received a doctorate in fine arts from boston university in 1960. He was very active in the fight for the recognition of african-american artists.he is one of the founders of the boston negro artists' association. Towards the end of the eighties, calvin burnett turned towards a more peaceful style, where he enriched his oil-painted canvases with references to engraving and treated the oil in the manner of printing inks. In the colored medium which has not yet dried, burnett draws fine and precise lines with the engraving point which give the construction an atmosphere close to the effects of engraving. The colors intermingle and the palette evolves towards browns, ochres and muted greens. It is a serene painting, where nudes become a favorite subject.
